“The Steward” 2012. Secco fresco with vintage b/w photos, gold leaf, wax on panel. 39”x 63”. Based on sketches and photos from Oak Island with my then 8 month old daughter and a tidal pool after high tide. Part landscape, part commentary, this fresco includes a female form walking away from the baby wading in the pool, the pool that reflects a fire burning in the distance that has absorbed the attention of the woman who is recording the event with what appears to be an iphone. The idea of the detachment from our lives and the world around us that a hand held device can produce has been debated often in recent years, with long lists of pros and cons. In this fresco the notion of detachment is emphasized not only from the infant being left unattended in the pool but also, as a visual device, from the head of the woman reflected in the pool, almost floating upside down detached from the body with the glow of the iphone seen in front of her face.
