“Early Birds- Daybreak Over Dorothea Dix”, secco fresco, b/w photos, gold leaf on panel, 20″x 33.5″ .
Based on photos taken in 2006, this is a fond portrait of an area of Dorothea Dix near Centennial Blvd., complete with the BB&T building in the background as well as the PNC Plaza still under construction. A good portion of the Dix property near this area has been slated for development as a large park in the near future, you can read on this here: http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/01/12/4470397/raleigh-mayor-deal-on-dix-park.html
The city skyline in the background has already changed significantly in the last eight years, and I wanted to record it before any development took place. The scene is early morning just as the sun curls over the lip of the horizon, the landscape is just starting to be revealed, populated with people from different points in time over the last 120 years.
